MS DOS Syntax and Commands

SHARE:

Taking a cue from the success of IBM PC DOS, Microsoft International launched MS-DOS in the year 1981.

It is a binary language based on character user interface (CUI) which allows the user to pass on instructions to the computer. Realising the demand for Graphical user interface (GUI) based operating systems, Microsoft did not release any new versions of MS-DOS after the year 2000.

Subsequently, it was completely replaced by Microsoft Windows operating system. Windows became more popular because of its multitasking abilities absent in the DOS program.

THE BASIC ACTIVITIES OF MS-DOS

MS-DOS system files are a vital part of the booting process.
Execution of all types of commands is controlled by COMMAND.COM, a system file of MS-DOS

  • It acts as a connecting link between hardware devices and the installed software.
  • Debugging of virus and bugs by scanning potential threats in system directories.
  • IO.SYS is used as a medium of communication between input and output devices.
  • MS-DOS assists in the distribution of storage space into various disk drives and directories.

Utility files are used for several tasks like calculation, word processing and office related tasks. MS-DOS executes one task at a time and cannot be operated by multiple users at the same time.

Types of files used in MS-DOS commands:

1. System files:

IO.SYS - It contains the inbuilt device drivers and the startup files used in the booting process.

MSDOS.SYS - This file contains the entire DOS kernel.

COMMAND.COM - It is the heart of MS-DOS and includes all the DOS commands in this single file.

AUTOEXEC.BAT - A batch file used for booting process.

CONFIG.SYS - Controls all system configurations and manages the device drivers.

2. Utility Files

APPEND - helps in finding data files.
ATTRIB - changes file types.
BACKUP/RESTORE - to prepare backup files and restore deleted items.
DELTREE - to remove a complete directory tree.
FORMAT - to format the disk drives.
DEBUG - to correct the syntax errors in command lines.
CHKDSK - scanning disk drives for viruses and bugs.
